Inside the Family Dining Room at St. Vincent de Paul kids were intensely focused on carving the best pumpkin. After everyone had completed their masterpieces, they lined them up for judging in the annual pumpkin carving contest that the dining room hosts in the days leading up to Halloween.

It's a fall tradition that both the kids and SVdP's interim housing residents who dine there look forward to as it brings them together in the spirit of good fun. This year's winners from our interim housing communities were Carmela, Cupid and Pamela. And the dining room family winners were Carlos, Kashey, Maribel and Reyna, holding pumpkins in the photo below.

The festivities and contest were made possible thanks to a generous donation of pumpkins from Bashas' and Walmart (150 each!).

"The kids as well as the adults love doing things they typically wouldn’t do or be able to afford," SVdP's Family Evening Program Manager Cindy Bernardo said. "We create events for the entire family to work together, play together and feel a part of a safe and vital community."

She especially loves seeing the teenagers, who are often hesitant to participate at first get sucked into the creative process, then be proud of their creation.
