Palomino event makes Christmas attainable
School buses pulled up in front of SVdP’s Hope Chest thrift store. Excited murmurs filled the inside of the bus, crescendoing as the doors swung open. Nearly 1,100 low-income elementary school students from Palomino Primary School in Phoenix stepped off, greeted by the beautiful songs of carolers at the entrance of the store. For one day, the thrift store was transformed into "Santa’s Workshop," where students could experience the joy of picking out four Christmas gifts for their loved ones at one dollar a piece.
Once inside the store, each child was paired with a volunteer shopper who offered guidance to help them find the perfect gifts. From kitchen appliances for their parents to toys for their siblings, each kid thoughtfully selected items and placed them in their shopping bags, eager to bring joy to their loved ones.
In addition to the festive atmosphere in the store, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus made a special appearance, posing for photos and spreading holiday cheer to the children. Santa’s elves added to the magic, ensuring each child felt special by handing out goodie bags filled with treats and a book to take home. This offered the kids a little something just for themselves to treasure during the holiday season.
This event was made possible through the generosity of SVdP’s partners Sagicor Life Insurance Company, Toyota Financial Services, U-Haul, and Health Services Advisory Group, who provided financial support and enthusiastic volunteers to help bring the day to life.
As the students boarded the buses to return to school, their faces lit up with happiness and pride, carrying thoughtful gifts for their families and the joy of giving during the holiday season.
